Goodbye Springfield

Published April 8, 2013 by kdorholt

I love the book Goodnight Moon! And when I read yesterday’s poetry prompt: “Write a goodbye poem,” the book popped into my mind. So I decided to try something I don’t usually do and write a poem that followed the book’s style and form. It’s kiddish–like the book–but I lived in Springfield when I was a kid, so it fits that way. Here goes:

Goodbye, Springfield*

In Springfield, Ohio, at 700 N. Burnett
There was a red brick house
with a backyard swing set
and a driveway and a garage
that wasn’t quite built yet.

Inside there was a family living day to day
There were three brothers
There was a mother
There was a father who kissed her
And only one sister
And an upstairs and a downstairs with Mom’s carpet of gray.

Goodbye brick house
Goodbye man and spouse
Goodbye children growing up
Goodbye Tiny Tears
and Davy Crockett cups.

Good bye playing “King of the Hill”
and Freddie Hours, always  so ill,
Goodbye Julia Mills and Alice Hayes
Goodbye Wren’s and Dollar Days

Goodbye catching fireflies
Goodbye Springfield skies
Goodbye milkman
and Tinkerbell and Peter Pan

Goodbye John’s missing shoe mystery
And goodbye First Communion Day
Goodbye Sr. Mary Charlotta
and Mom’s carpet of gray.

Goodbye creaking upstairs steps
Goodbye hand prints on the wall
Goodbye to that childhood I cherish and recall.

*Thanks and apologizes to Margaret Wise Brown
