Hello, Minneapolis

Published April 18, 2013 by kdorholt
Since my good-bye poem was to Springfield, Ohio, I felt my hello poem should be to Minneapolis, where we moved to from Springfield. Once again, I used the form of  the much-loved Good Night, Moon.
Hello, Minneapolis
In Minneapolis, Minnesota, at 6600 Unity North
There was one gray-shingled Donnay rambler
with newly planted sparse grass
and three spindly maple trees
and a driveway of gravel, not black-topped yet.Inside was a family growing bigger
There were now four brothers
There was the same mother
There was the father who still kissed her
And the same sister,
And a basement and a main floor with Mom’s shag carpet of green.Hello new gray-shingled house
Hello same man and same spouse
Hello family growing bigger
Hello pretty Barbie dolls
and loud “Captain May I” calls.

Hello snow days’ surprises
and snow drifts kids’ sizes!
Hello neighborhood full of boys
and Mr. Softee’s ice cream joys.

Hello Twin Lakes and Theodore Wirth.
Hello Fun Fair at St. Al’s Church.
Hello, people saying “borrow me”
and Mom’s shag carpet of green.

Hello new basement stairs.
Hello scarey meal called “hot dish.”
Hello to more birthdays–now with freshly caught fish.

*With gratitude and apologizes, once again, to Margaret Wise Brown
