Memories of a Maiden Name: a Love Poem (NaPoWriMo 4/7/2014, Maiden Name Karason)

Published April 7, 2014 by kdorholt

We are
an evolved love—
you and I.
In early years
I avoided you:
strange, foreign,
different, arbitrary,
yearning for
what other
girls had.
Did you
have to stay
so attached
to me?

With time
I grew.
I changed,
remarkably, with
my feelings
toward you.
i came to
maturity; I
deeply knew
you; I
knew me.
Triumphantly, me!

Slowly, like
waking from
a slumber,
I cherished
the gift
I had in you.
You were
not like
other sons:
Peterson, Olson
Johnson, Anderson
Hanson, Thompson
So common, innocuous
Whole homerooms
filled with just one.

In your
crowned uniqueness,
your exultant sound
your ancient soul
you were
a melody.
With you,
I was
music.
What a gift!
Each day
I was
Christmas.

How could
I have
abandoned you?
Forsaken you for
another?
For lasting love.
For tradition’s sake.
To be like
all the other girls.
And for you
there is
only loss,
a patched hole,
a waterless well.

Still, you
remain a part
of me,
though hidden,
I call on you
when years
and yearnings
prove too much,
when I need
to be just
me again,
young and grounded.
You are
the melody
I recall.
