Hey! What About Those Vikes?!: a poem of Norse-myth kennings (NaPaWriMo 4/13/2014)

I am not a football fan. However, I lived in Minnesota during the Seventies, so I was in the midst of the Vikings (mostly) glory days, and I think they should be remembered and celebrated–I guess. When I read that kennings come from Norse myths, a poem about the Minnesota Vikings seemed a perfect fit.
Here goes!

Hey! What About Those Vikes?!: a poem of Norse kennings

Let this praise-smith
pen the lip-stream
of the Ice Man,
the Breaker-of-Rings,
and his Varangian guard,
fellers of life’s web,
who once filled the fields
with battle sweat and
Lead by Loki,
and the dwellers
at the top of the
beast Center-Mick
and Wrong-Way.

Through Boreas’s-burning
weather of the wolves,
the sky’s black cloak,
and Thor’s laughter,
they remained
children of battle.
All ill-fatted cattle kin
should have heeded
Mimir’s warning
“Beware! Ye Pack-Longshoremen,
you suffer the shame-of-swords
in the spear-din you enter.”

Like the unblooded,
the dolts,
time and again
returned to the frozen-road
and felt the fury
of the Northern-kiss
the winter’s-spear,
the breaker-of-trees,
the white-death,
that was the Vikings
invincible sons of Odin
lord-of-the-gallows, and flaming-eye.

Remember ye always
the best be-times
oh, children-of-evergreen
and nature’s-many-mirrors,
your biting snakes of pigskin.
The Tyr-valiant Vikings!
Once the sleep-of-the-sword,
the Purple-Punch and
People-Eaters, and
the flame of battle
More than mere
vessels of bone.
Worthy of Vidar’s voice
and mind’s worth!
