Unequal Bittersweet

My bittersweet is not
an autumn miracle
With bunches of berries
that blend from green,
to yellow, to orange–
unequaled in brilliance!
Nature’s celebrated send-off
to warmer days, and
a happy harbinger
of winter’s holiday
berries of its own.
Nor warm, comforting color
to paint the living room,
for all the family
a welcome home!

My bittersweet is the
best of literature!
The true-life ending,
not the fairy-tale finish,
a longing that lasts
past the last sentence
melancholy, meaningful,
makes me feel human
and whole and right
yet torn apart with willful
desire to divert the
author’s mind and
make it mine! Slowly
silenced by satisfying truth
it’s not my story:

Scout, lying in sickbed,
meets mythical, battered Boo
at last because
he selflessly saves her
from dreadful death!
and then he’s seen no
more—a real man once;
an enigma always.

Pooh and Puff forever!
Learn the pang of parting
For Christopher Robin,
Jackie Paper must
grow on and part
with childhood play
and friendly fantasy—
a twinkle in life’s memory.

Charlotte, truest friend
in the araneae world,
saves Wilbur from
certain slaughter—
salvation by her
humble spinning!
And silently dies
in shadow, alone.

The unicorns are freed
from the prison sea,
prancing once again
in virgin forrest!
Gone forever, Lir’s
still loyal true love,
always a one-horned
beast who’s learned regret.

Valjean, some’s ultimate hero!
Loses his fight for
Frenchmen’s freedom
along with the throng
of citizens massacred beside
him, united with Cosette and
Marius for merely a moment—
an angel holds his soul.

The three hero
Musketeers of once
unshatterable, certain souls
defeat the deadly duo
Milady and Richelieu!
Suffering the the sorrowful
death of d’Artagnan’s great
love, Madame Bonacieus.

Denmark’s Ellen escapes,
her loved land liberated—
no more notorious Nazis!
Yet Peter lies buried
in cruel, forgotten
unknown grave
not by his
beloved Lise’s side.

Buttercup and Wesley
in happily ever after
at last! But wait,
maybe life is not
a fantastic fairy tale
“maybe life isn’t fair
only better than death—
that’s all.”
