Anna Mae (NaPoWriMo 4/20/14)

Published April 20, 2014 by kdorholt

*My Grandma Anna Mae was always a puzzle to me– a real riddle. She never talked or shared much and always seemed a bit removed and strict, not only with us children, but with herself, too. Then one day my mom told me a secret–one of the only things she knew about her mother. She had been engaged to a wealthy man before she married Grandpa. There was one other secret–mysteriously her father brought her back from Pennsylvania, where she was an accountant, to Akron. My imagination concocted the rest, but I bet I’m right.

None need know
my secret!
It is secured
in my mind.
Love’s story
locked away
alone.

Vaguely, some
few shall
only know
I was
engaged
once,
not to Oscar—
before Oscar.

Daddy brought
me, the
dearest daughter,
back from the
break. He
bitter, broken-
hearted for me.

Even then
I sat up
straight,
mouth closed
in a taut,
tight line—
my position
of choice

in a world
now
that offered
a woman
few choices:
no vote,
no bank loans,
no dream

to decide
yes or no.
My only options:
to keep a
surreptitious, singular
secret—
a particular
portion of my
life story—

and
an
elected
dignity,
too
disrespectful
to
describe.
