Age Appropriate: a New York Style Poem

Published April 21, 2014 by kdorholt

Sunlight streaming through my bay window
emphasizes my emotions
I feel invigorated after morning exercise
endorphins pumped by my accomplishment
physically fit, mentally alert
perusing the net
(which is so much better
than fingers inked
black from newspapers)
there she is pictured
in perfect practice—
roller skates laced up tight,
legs in supple splits
braids rakishly waving over shoulders
tongue out in childish concentration
the headline—a warning to me:
22 Things You
Should Never Do
Again After 50
splits on skates is one,
okay, ow,
limbo at neighborhood barbecues,
of course,
crowd surfing in mosh pits,
sheer terror!
the list continues,
but I need not read
one word more
(best kept as past possibilities)
my muscles begin a bitter ache
like they’ve been beaten by Batman
my spine stiffens, like a mummy’s
my arches fall like sky divers
I was soaring so gold-medal
-winner a moment ago
now (thanks to the
enlightening article)
I’m feeling
my appropriate age.
