A Golden Shovel and a Georgic Earth Day Poem

I wrote two poems today because the directions for the georgic weren’t posted when I first checked. Since today is Earth Day, I wrote the popular recycled poem known as a Golden Shovel. The directions are to take a line from a poem and poet you admire and make those words the last words in each line of your poem. I chose Lucille Clifton’s “Blessing the Boats” which may be familiar to some of you.  The second poem I wrote is a georgic poem which instructs how to grow or tend to something–usually in nature. The lotus picture is appropriate for both my poems.

Golden Shovel Poem on Earth Day
(With special thanks to poet Lucille Clifton)

A baby can be born in May
as much like you as you
a kindred soul to open
true gifts of joy that your
heart hides from your eyes
and you will remember how to
love as the lotus does the water.

An Earth Day Georgic

Tend to your soul
as the water
does the lily–
let it ride on
ripples safely in
your embrace,
keeping time to
its true nature.
