A Winter Walk in April

A Wisconsin Walk in April

I step out
into the April afternoon.
Winter herringbone coat
buttoned all the way, but one . . .

Balled, brown, crocheted scarf
wrapped one around
my neck, then again
for extra protection . . .

Stocking hat pulled
purposefully over my ears
for welcomed warmth . . .
Mittened hands stuffed
securely in my pockets.

The falling snow
greets me in
a whirlwind of
tiny crepe-paper pieces

–not the
raindrops, I had
honestly hoped for–

they sting my
face in reeling reminder
of the should-be wetter
rain of April.

I duck my head
to avoid their
prickly bombardment
to see snowflakes . . .

cover the sidewalk
with a sifting of
Tide-like substance.

It crunches beneath
my feet as if
the sky has slovenly
spilled the Tide box.

I remember Mother
repeating the age-old
prophecy to me,
a young girl,

pouting from our
picture window.
outdoor play thwarted
by an April rain.

“April showers
bring May flowers.”

Hrummmph, Mother!
What should I
anticipate this May?

I suppose!
