Hawaii’s Gift (Or It’s Not a Boycott if Nobody Wants You)

Hawaii has been in the news quite a bit lately which has prompted me to write this poem. I’ve tried to make it reminiscent of the sea and waves–their form, motion, and reliance on continuity.

Hawaii’s Gift

the waves . . . roll in
and caress
the shore . . .` warmed by
the heat of
the sun’s shining . . . brightens
and bequeaths
the skiest blue . . . radiated
so pure
in babies’ eyes . . . give back
the joy of
this one day . . . dances into
it’s own end
this one night . . . echoes
the language of
lovers’ laughter . . . returns
to the sea
life’s source . . . tumbled in
a truly tropical
five senses . . . of beauty
present here . . . our gift
of always
the waves roll in
