Below the Surface

Below the Surface

The only-28
tell their migrants’ memory
of how the luckless
paid for passage
to breathe their own air
in the land of
pope and pasta
instead met
the waves of
salt and swordfish
never to rise
only to descend.

Oh, hear of how
the locked-in-lower-hulls
with dreams to
breathe their own air
intertwined in
last gasp
to begin their
living ghost like
staring from portholes
and windows
as offer to be eaten
by the water travelers
ears and eyes first.

Say a prayer
to All-that-Is-Holy
when you hear
their migrants’ memory
for the only-28
the locked-in-lower-hulls
and their cries
that never again
will reach the grace
where lands meet
only echoed to water travelers
and the others locked-within.
