Part of You Bullishly Believes in 1973 (based on the top five songs for that year, NaPoWriMo 4/9/2013 Random Song-list Poem)

You’ve yet to learn
who you are–that
you’re so vain!
No one is redeemed
in excessive, ostentatious pride–
in vainglory.
You list your accomplishments
in your every email, post,
or tweet like the whole
world wants to know.
You keep a daily
diary of every daydream
for any imminent emergencies.

Are you aware
that your silly
superstition about
a mixture of pond algae,
past-date pudding,
and crushed crocodile rock
will keep pimples
from sprouting,
nails from breaking
lipstick from smearing
and boys at bay
is really a way to nurture
constant, nagging nausea?

Yesterday, at Sephora
you seriously said, (no speculation)
“See that man humming
diabolically by the Dior display?
He sings that special spell
with particular purpose
surmising cynically he
is killing me, soflty
with his song . . . but
I’ve bested that beast
by conjuring a confection
designed to derail his love train!
Guaranteed . . . by Givenchy!”
