To Harley Quinn the Harlequin

For some reason today’s prompt made me think of the harlequin Harley Quinn, the character in love with the Joker, from Batman. I don’t usually rhyme my poems, but it seemed to add to the playfulness of the prompt, so I kept it.

To Harlequin Harley Quinn

(For Matt Maffia–our family’s cartoon connoisseur)

Let them call you “a lotta nuts”
For falling for the misanthropic clown.
The heart need not reason with the head
When your Joker rules in Gotham town.

Go all “Looney Tunes” and let love rule.
Your heart beats to comedic bliss.
Your passion’s plaything—but no fool
You crave the Joker’s mirthful kiss.

Wear your tight suit, blocked red and black
And lure your love in prankish ways.
Your masked mischievous, puckish eyes,
They see and know the game life plays.

Join in the joke and help your man
Defeat that cartoonish cur, his foe!
You and your Joker will endure
He needs you e’er in cheer or woe.

There’s only one can spoil your fun,
A caped-crusader dressed in bat.
He trifles with your Puddin’s head.
It’s hard to love and deal with that.

Who knows, some day you just may find
You and your Joker really win.
What could be the harm in that?
Why’s trumping Batman such a sin?
