Wrapped in Wonder

Wrapped in Wonder

Oh, Spring, I sing your praise
with my full-hearted thanksgiving.
What a gift you give,
each year, appearing
precisely at the point
when days seem
dreariest and grayest
and most exhausted–
worn out
with winter.
On that day,
I chance to hear
a red-breasted robin trill
its staccato call,
my happy heart
immediately beats
lighter and my
spirit sores

Spring? Can you
see the neighborhood
so wrapped away
with winter, reborn,
as children reject
their walled-in rooms
and make mirthful
outside occupations
their new home?
Playmates’ happy calls
replace the once
full silence and
every child’s laugh is
a sumptuous song.

Smitten, I smell the
exposed earth,
experiencing the eternal
ecstasy of life–
a quickening in my soul.
Bending to scoop
a compact bit–
cool and granular
and glorifyingly gritty
smelling of life’s
perennial promise–spring.

This small sample,
confidently casts cobwebs
away with the wily wind.
A gleaming garden grows
within my aroused mind
and thoughts thrill
at anticipated annual
planting of this
spring season’s
first purple-faced pansy
and pink-lipped petunias

Yes, Spring,
your miracle magic
in gleeful gratitude, I
begin to spy shoots
of blonde daffodils
and scarlet tulips
anticipating their cleansing
color and sunshined cheer,
stemming forth from
the dark, moist earth

Each delight-filled day
is wrapped warmly
with winsome wonder
grateful gasps and
rightly ribboned round
with delirious dreaming.
Oh, Spring,
when you arrive
every day brings
a birth day surprise!
